Abstract: In order to detect a surface defect in a metallic component, according to the phenomenon of the open magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet on the surface of the component, the finite element method was used to establish a magnetic field model for the surface defect, and the spatial distribution characteristics of the leakage magnetic field were obtained. By changing the depth, width and air gap height, the influences of surface defect parameters on the open magnetic field were studied, and the variation in the magnetic flux density components and that in the amplitudes were analyzed. Tests of artificial surface defects were carried out under laboratory conditions. The results show that the magnetic flux density is higher at the defect location, the magnetic flux density increases with the increasing of both the depth and the width of the defect, and the greater the height of the air gap is, the lower the magnetic flux densitywill be. The experimental results are consistent with the results of the finite element researches and analysis.
